Moving to a new Home?
Moving can be a daunting task. You’ve likely spent years in the home you are currently in, and accumulated lots of stuff. Where do you start?
Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a checklist of things to do to prepare you for your move?
Well… here it is!
The Moving Checklist
6 Weeks Prior to Moving Day
| Research and schedule movers. If you are moving yourself, reserve a rental truck and call your four biggest friends. | |
| Arrange for cleaning and repair of any window coverings that you are leaving behind. | |
| Check with your insurance company to ensure that your possessions are covered during transit. | |
| Create a binder of your important records: Gather personal and family records (medical/dental), veterinary and school records, legal and financial documents, birth certificates, passports, and insurance. | |
| Research, visit, and enroll your children in a school local to your new home. |
4 Weeks Prior to Moving Day
| Schedule a disconnect for all utility services the day after you move. If you have deposits with utilities, request a refund. | |
| Schedule a utility connection for the day before you move in to the new home. | |
| Prepare auto registrations for transfer (If moving out of Province/State). | |
| Purchase packing materials: Boxes (small, medium, and large. Consider special TV boxes for that monster on the wall), packing paper, bubble wrap, tape, markers. | |
| Sort and purge everything before packing so that you are only moving items that you wish to keep. | |
| Schedule, advertise, and hold a moving sale. |
3 Weeks Prior to Moving Day
| Arrange for disposal and donation of anything not sold in your moving sale. Many charities will pick up. | |
| Return any items borrowed from neighbours / Retrieve items lent. Return any books to the library. | |
| Begin packing. Start with the most infrequently used items, such as seasonal clothing and items. | |
| Assemble a folder of information to leave for the new owners (owners manuals and contact numbers for the furnace, water heater, dishwasher, fridge, stove, washer & dryer, etc..) |
.
2 Weeks Prior to Moving Day
| Make child care arrangements for moving day. | |
| Confirm arrival date and time with moving company. | |
| Notify creditors, banks, employer, insurance company, etc… of your new address. | |
| Change mailing address with post office and set up mail forwarding. | |
| Pack a travel kit: put aside critical items like credit cards & passports. Pack a flashlight, keys, toiletries, tools, disposable plates/cups/cutlery, first aid kit, and games for the kids. Also pack a suitcase of a days worth of clothing for everyone. |
1 Day Prior to Moving Day
| Disconnect, clean and prepare any major appliances that you are moving with you. (Defrost freezer 24 hours before move if it’s coming with you.) | |
| Pack a box of items that will be needed first when you get to the new house. Clearly label this box “Pack Last / Open First”. | |
| Obtain cash for the trip, and to pay the movers. | |
| Set aside anything that will be packed in your car with you, so that it doesn’t get loaded onto the truck. (Bedding, pillows, stuffies/toys, travel kit) | |
| If moving yourself, dismantle beds and other large furniture. Take Monster TVs off the wall, and patch the holes. | |
| Pick up dry cleaning. |
.
Moving Day !!
| Pack up refrigerator and perishables into coolers. | |
| Clear driveway and sidewalk of vehicles, debris, and snow to allow moving truck and team safe access. | |
| Note all utility meter readings. | |
| Read your bill of lading and inventory carefully, and note any damages prior to loading truck. | |
| Be prepared to pay your movers in cash unless other arrangements have previously been made. | |
| Load children, pets, and travel accessories into car. | |
| Please drive safely and enjoy your new home! |
